There has certainly not been a shortage of shows and movies set in Los Angeles, but specifically many set in Beverly Hills. Just to name a few: Clueless, Pretty Woman, Beverly Hills Cop, Troop Beverly Hills, L.A. Story, and many more stretching back to the beginning of Hollywood, when few buildings existed in the area. But today, I am celebrating the 30th anniversary of the iconic teen film “Clueless” that brought us a fabulous slice of California pop culture, from slang to fashion. Released in July 1995, this witty update of Jane Austen’s Emma defined a generation — and put Beverly Hills on the map as the ultimate teen dream destination. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a curious traveler, here’s how you can walk in Cher’s (designer) shoes and relive some of the film’s most iconic moments right here in LA.
Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits:
- Writer/director Amy Heckerling was inspired by her own fascination with rich LA teens and their lingo — which is how we got “As if!”, “Whatever,” and “Totally buggin’.”
- Alicia Silverstone was only 18 during filming and often had no idea how iconic the dialogue would become.
- Most of the school scenes weren’t filmed in Beverly Hills, but at Occidental College in Eagle Rock and Ulysses S. Grant High School in Valley Glen.
Clueless Filming Locations You Can Visit:
- Cher’s House: The actual Horowitz mansion is located at 5148 Louise Ave in Encino, not Beverly Hills! It’s a private residence, so admire respectfully from the street.
- Westside Pavilion Mall: Where Cher gives Tai a makeover (and works that escalator in her yellow plaid). While much of the mall has been redeveloped, it’s still a fun pilgrimage spot.
- Beverly Hills Park: The dreamy scene where Cher realizes she’s in love with Josh was filmed at Beverly Gardens Park — perfect for a romantic selfie moment.
- The “Val Party” house: Located in Altadena, this hillside home was the backdrop for the infamous “Rolling with the Homies” party scene.
Experience Beverly Hills, Clueless Style
To fully immerse yourself, grab a matcha and window shop on Rodeo Drive, book a stay at a stylish hotel (with vintage vibes to match the era), and maybe even treat yourself to a mini makeover — because, in Cher’s words, “You see how picky I am about my shoes and they only go on my feet!”
Celebrate 30 years of Clueless by reliving the fashion, the sass, and the sun-soaked glamor of 90s Beverly Hills. Just remember: Never trust mirrors in bad lighting, always have a fabulous driving playlist — and totally RSVP to that Val party. Visit Discover LA or Love Beverly Hills
