This past week was the 40th anniversary of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, the quintessential teen fun comedy in the John Hughes universe. The late director and producer was known for writing, producing, and directing such films as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Uncle Buck, and writing Pretty in Pink and Home Alone. But also, for setting so many of his stories in Chicago in Chicago and its suburbs primarily because he grew up there and felt a strong connection to the area. He chose to live there and film there, preferring the “vibe” of the city and its people over the more artificial environment of Los Angeles. He also believed that the suburbs, often overlooked as a film setting, offered a unique and relatable backdrop for his stories about adolescence and everyday life.

For Ferris in particular, the Windy City is explored in all of its glory, and the Chicago Tribune recently wrote a fantastic round up of film locations. Some of the more famous scene highlights include:

  • Cameron Frye’s house, 370 Beech St., Highland Park, Chicago
  • Ferris Bueller’s high school, performing arts center turned into a high school , Glenbrook North, 2300 Shermer Road, Northbrook
  • Tom Bueller’s office – The Nuveen building at 333 W. Wacker Drive
  • Willis (Sears Tower) Skydeck, 103rd floor
  • Chicago Board of Trade, 141 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago

Synopsis: Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has an uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, “borrows” a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day journey through the streets of Chicago. On Ferris’ trail is high school principal Rooney, determined to catch him in the act.
