Considering this week is the Cannes Film Festival, it seemed like a good time to revisit the stylish 1955 Alfred Hitchcock Film “To Catch A Thief” mainly set there. Starring Grace Kelly (her third film with Hitchcock) and Cary Grant (his fourth), the movie was one of the most visually sumptuous of with its backdrop of the Côte d’Azur, is garnered an Academy Award for Best Cinematography to Robert Burks, with Hal Pereira, Joseph McMillan Johnson, Samuel M. Comer, and Arthur Krams all nominated for Best Art Direction and Edith Head received one of her 35 Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design.

Locations: Primarily filmed in the South of France, with many scenes set in Cannes, Nice, Monaco, and the surrounding countryside. Also featured locations like Cagnes-sur-Mer, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Saint-Jeannet in the French Riviera.

Style: Legendary Top costume designer Edith Head created Grace Kelly’s fabulous wardrobe to reflect her character Frances Stevens status and wealth, which according to “Edith Head The Fifty Year Career of Hollywood’s Greatest Costume Designer”, Hitchcock wanted fashion to be central as the film given the glamor of the locations and the plot centered jewels and high society. Grace Kelly’s wardrobe was all custom, whereas Cary Grant’s casual riviera style reflects his “apartness” from the rich crowd.

Synopsis: Notorious cat burglar John Robie (Cary Grant) has long since retired to tend vineyards on the French Riviera. When a series of robberies is committed in his style, John must clear his name. Armed with a list of people who own the most expensive jewels currently in the area, John begins following the first owner, young Francie (Grace Kelly). When her jewels are stolen, Francie suspects John, destroying their tentative romance. John goes on the lam to catch the thief and clear his own name.
